Few misunderstandings on both sides causes that the drawing of Stina went a little bit (just a little) wrong. It would take to long to explain the details. The thing that matters is: She is available again and I decided to offer her directly from this blog. Stina, her baby, placenta with cord, clothing with hand knitted details and baby carries cost 395 Euro + 38 Euro for registered, insured shipping. If you like to give Stina and her baby a new home send a mail to tabea.korten@gmail.com. If she is still available I will send you an invoice and my paypal address. She's ready to ship and will be on her way the first working day after payment. Infos and Terms can be found here. I highly recommend this doll for school children and to show them first with parents accompaniment. This doll is not suitable for children under three years due to small parts and magnets. Choking hazard.

One of the problems ,why the drawing went wrong, was that Facebook changed its algorithm. I received mails from people who were disappointed, because the Facebook post with the notice of the drawing was not, or to late shown on their comment wall. So I decided to announce next time on the landing page of "Sonnenwiege" when new dolls are available - at least one week before the sale starts. 

If I´d want to reach all the people who liked my page via Facebook, I´d have to pay for it. And this would be not affordable for me, if I had to do it every time. I want to try something new. I created a Facebook group to announce new dolls and custom spots. So if you want to make sure you wont miss a doll via Facebook, I welcome you to join this group: New "Sonnenwiege" dolls and custom spots. Of course you are welcome to post pictures of your "Sonnenwiege" dolls there. 

And I will also leave a note on Twitter and Flickr.

I hope on this way everyone who is interested, will achieve the news. I don´t want to leave people disappointed ;).

Eine sonnige Begegnung

Just a few days ago I found this Pinn on Pinterest:

A friend send me this, because she thought I would be interested about this other artist who is making birth giving dolls. And of course - I was. So I became aware of Lina Maria Aguirre and her beautiful website. Her label is called "Sonniger Wald" and she started making dolls years before I founded "Sonnenwiege". Her kind of making dolls fascinated me. Her way to tell stories with her dolls - not only with her birthing dolls - also with her "another beings of the wood" - touched me.

I wanted to contact her, but as her website was mainly written in Spanish, I was not sure if I could contact her in German or English. But I was lucky - she also found my page - just a few days after my first visit on her site. She wrote me a mail and a brief exchange of mails resulted. I´m lucky to met such a dear colleague in the virtual world. But there was a drop of bitterness beside all the kind words we exchanged. Lina wondered if I made my photos probably based on her ideas - without mentioning her as the author. I was kind of shocked. Because respectful interaction with other people and appreciation of the creative performance of other artists is very important to me.

Some similarities of her and my pictures are really amazing and so and I can understand her suspicion.

However, my images could not be made ​​according to her ideas, because I did not know her photos when I was making mine. My pictures were inspired by experiences I made while working as a midwife. 

I can´t and I don't want to undo the pictures I've taken.  But I can and I want to introduce to you the fabulous art of "Sonniger Wald".
I want you, my dear readers, to know about this great artist, who lovingly deals with the same theme over years, that also captured me: Birth and maternity. The love of family.

She made this pictures long before I ever thought of my first birth giving doll. 

I´m glad that she contact me and we could "talk" about this misapprehension.

I´m so sorry that my pictures made Lina feel robbed of her work, without that I had aware done something wrong.

I think it is important to beg everyone: Respect the creative work of others. Let the work of others be your inspiration, but respect the copyright. Mention the source. Respect the creative works of others as they should respect your creations  And if it happens without awareness - talk about it and search for a way to pay tribute to original author.

This should be my way to pay tribute to the fabulous art of Lina. And maybe you like to see the pictures of her and mine in direct comparison. Now that the anger has dissipated, I enjoy looking at these pics. I admire Linas eye for details. I am excited about the similarities and the differences.

About new dolls, new ideas and a new online shop

(Liebe deutschsprachige Leser, ich habe beschlossen dieses Blog nur noch in Englisch fortsetzten, da die meisten meiner Leser aus dem englischsprachigem Raum kommen und es sehr mühevoll ist alles zweisprachig zu verfassen.Ich bitte um euer Verständnis.)

Finally it is done. After almost three years, the first dolls are for sale. Thursday I will open the doors of my new web shop at IndieCard.
I want to say "Thank you!" to all those people that supported and not forgotten me and my dolls the last years. Your loving feedback and mails were definitely the most important support for me. And the reason to dust off my sewing machine and start with doll making again.
Now that Mona and Alexa are finished and their stories are told. I want to tell a little bit more about what inspired me to sew them the way I did at last.

As midwife I was always fascinated by birth giving and breastfeeding dolls by other artists. But I could not find a doll which captured me in a way that I wanted to purchase it. So I began thinking about sewing my own. I don´t wanted to create a toy, but tool for midwifes and childbirth educators. The beginning was hard. I had to figure out completely new ways of sewing and constructing dolls, These childbirth education dolls have to be extremely stable. To demonstrate the birth process, the dolls are pushed and pulled at different spots.
The construction of the doll body is very complex and I decided to machine sew the limbs to the body.So I had to stuff arms and legs through extra openings that had to be closed careful with small stitches by hand. The seams are inconspicuous, but a little visible.

It was also important to me to create adult proportions for the "mother dolls". While crafting it turned out that it was significant to make the head smaller and to construct a neck.

But the most difficult thing was to create the wigs of mother and child. I wanted to show the fontanels at the baby's head. And the head has to withstand some rubbing. It took some time but then I found inspiration while watching a pretty famous little person: Fröken Skicklig`s Kiki in the meadow.

I think most of you will know this amazing little girl created by the fabulous Juliane alias Fröken Skicklig. I knew and loved Juliane´s blog for a long time. Juliane enchants me with her dolls, pictures and stories. And she is one of the most creative doll makers I know.

I had never seen anyone before using wool felt for a doll wig like Juliane did at Kiki. So I tried wool felt,too. And it turned out to be the solution. Wool felt is a wonderful material for doll making. Meanwhile I´m using it not only for the wigs, but also for other details like the placenta and cord.

Mona`s story

Mona - the first months

Mona trifft heute zum ersten Mal ihre Hebamme. (Ihr habt recht, dass ist Tami - sie ist eine junge Mutter - und eine Hebamme). Da Mona ihr erstes Kind erwartet hat sie viele Fragen. Tami kommt Mona zu Hause besuchen. Dort würde Mona auch gerne Entbinden, wenn die Schwangerschaft unkompliziert verläuft. Die ersten Monate sind aufregend. seid Mona weiß, dass sie Schwanger ist drehen sich ihre Gedanken nur noch um ihr ungeborenes Kind. Es tut gut, dass Tami sie als Hebamme schon während der Schwangerschaft begleitet.

Mona meets today her midwife for the first time. (You are right, that is Tami - she is a young mother - and a midwife). As Mona is expecting her first child, she has many questions. Tami visits Mona at her home. Mona would also like to give birth at home if the pregnancy continues uncomplicated. The first months are exciting. Since Mona had realized that she is pregnant she couldn´t stop thinking about her unborn child. It is good that Tami accompanies her as midwife during pregnancy.

Während ich diesen Post schreibe, gehen meine Gedanken zehn Jahre zurück. Damals war ich das erste mal Schwanger - ich war zwar bereits Hebamme, aber trotzdem so dankbar in "meiner" Hebamme eine Ansprechpartnerin für alle großen und kleinen Sorgen gefunden zu haben. Sie war die zweite nach meinem Mann, die von meiner Schwangerschaft erfahren hat. Wie ist es Euch gegangen, nachdem ihr erfahren habt, dass ihr schwanger seid. Mögt Ihr Euch darüber mit mir hier oder auf Facebook unterhalten? Ich bin gespannt auf Eure Geschichten.

While I´m writing this post, I´ve in mind the time ten years ago. At this time I was pregnant for the first time - I was indeed already a midwife, but nevertheless so grateful to found in "my" midwife a person to talk to about all large and small concerns. She was the second person I told about the pregnancy. What were your thoughts when you realized that you are pregnant?  Do you like to chat with me about this here or on Facebook? 9 Monate im Zeitraffer - 9 months in time lapse

Folgt Mona und Alexa durch eine aufregende Zeit.

Es ist einer dieser verregneten Tage, an denen man es sich am Besten zu Hause gemütlich macht. Alexa hat Mona zum Tee eingeladen. Die beiden kennen sich seid Kindertagen. Alexa wohnt seid kurzem wieder in der Nachbarschaft von Mona. Die beiden machen es sich auf dem Sofa bequem. Mona bewundert Alexas neue Wohnung. Sie sprechen über vergangene Tage und kichern vergnügt über Geschichten aus der Schulzeit.

It is one of those rainy days - the best you can do is prepar a cosy day at home. Alexa has invited her friend Mona for a cup of tee. They know each other since children days. Alexa moved recently back to the neighborhood of Mona. Both are relaxing on the sofa. Mona admires Alexa's new flat. They talk about days gone by and giggle about stories from school days.

Nachdem sie die zweite Tasse Tee getrunken haben, wird Alexa ernster. "Ich möchte dir noch etwas erzählen: ich bin schwanger!" Mona muss kichern, das irritiert Alexa. Und dann platzt es aus Mona heraus: "Wirklich! Ich auch!" "Wann ist es bei dir soweit?" "Ende des Jahres!" "Dann haben unsere Babys vielleicht sogar den gleichen Geburtstag!"

After they drank the second cup of tea, Alexa gets serious. "I would like to tell you something: I'm pregnant" Mona has to giggle, which irritates Alexa. Mons has to explain: "Really? Me too!" "When will be your due date?" "At the end of the year!" "Then our babies maybe will have even the same birthday!"

Beide lachen und vergießen ein paar Freudentränen. Sie halten diesen besonderen Moment mit einem Foto fest, um später den Kinder davon zu erzählen.

They both laugh and shed a few tears of joy. They take a photo, to  tell the children later about this special moment.

Facts about Tami and her baby

Yes. I wanted to tell you more about Tami and her Baby a few days ago. But time to write was rare as I decided to sew two birth giving and breastfeeding dolls to offer at my Etsy-shop in a few weeks, after I got several mails asking if I would sell dolls like Tami. And I like to offer you some dolls soon. But I won´t take customs for "Tami dolls" or my "normal dolls" befor autumn this year. I will keep you up to date about when and how I will offer dolls. So here are some facts:

Das Treffen der Hebamme und der Puppenmacherin in mir.

Let me introduce Tami. Tami is a doll I designed related to experiences I made while working as a midwife. I worked as a midwife before I became mother of my first daughter. I loved it and I miss working with mothers, babys and their families. And I missed sewing dolls. So I designed Tami a doll made by a midwife for midwifes, doulas, educators, therapist and parents who want to teach older sibling about the wonders of pregnancy and birth. This doll can give birth and breastfeed her child.

wie schön, dass sich, obwohl ich so wenig schreibe und so wenige Puppen hier zeige immer noch Leser auf meinen Blog „verirren“. Ich habe im Moment wirklich nur sehr wenige und sehr kleine Zeitfenster um zu Nähen und schöne Puppen zu entwerfen. Diese Leidenschaft ist in den letzten Monaten wirklich zu kurz gekommen.

Und es gibt noch etwas, dass ich vermisse: Wie einige wissen bin ich Hebamme – eine Hebamme. die für ihre eigenen Kinder zur Zeit eine ziemlich lange Pause einlegt. Mir fehlt das Arbeiten mit Schwangeren, Müttern und Vätern, Ungeborenen und neuen Erdenbürgern. Und der Austausch mit lieben Kolleginnen fehlt mir auch. Wie vielen tollen Frauen bin ich begegnet, als ich noch als Hebamme gearbeitet haben. Den Hebammen geht es in Deutschland zur Zeit nicht besonders gut. Sie müssen um ihre Existenz fürchten – und sie kämpfen. Es schmerzt mich. (Über die Hebammen-Misere haben andere viel besser und ausführlicher gebloggt als ich es hier vermag. Aus dieser Sehnsucht heraus ist Tami entstanden. Tami ist eine Puppe, wie ich sie mir für meine Hebammenarbeit gewünscht hätte. Eine Begleiterin für Geburtsvorbereitungskurse und Einzelgespräche und für das gemeinsame Staunen mit werdenden Eltern und großen Geschwistern. Tami habe ich ursprünglich nur für mich genäht. Um wieder Puppen zu nähen und um wieder ein bisschen Hebamme zu sein. Und nun möchte ich sie doch mit euch teilen.

Hebammenpuppe Tami: Eine Puppe, die gebären und stillen kann.

Heute stelle ich euch Tami aus Hebammensicht vor. Morgen aus der Perspektive der Puppenmacherin.

Ich habe Tami erdacht, damit man mit ihr über alle möglichen Belange rund um Schwangerschaft, Geburt und Wochenbett ins Gespräch kommen kann. Als Anknüpfungspunkt für Hebammen, Therapeuten und Pädagogen.Sie ist nicht in erster Linie als Spielzeug gedacht, aber sie ist so stabil gearbeitet, dass sie auch bespielt werden kann.

Was Tami mitunter kann:

Tami kann schwanger sein. Man kann mit ihrer Hilfe demonstrieren, welche Lagen ein Ungeborenes im Mutterleib ein nehmen kann. Mit den Fingerspitzen kann man von außen süren, wie das Kind liegt. So kann man eine Vorstellung davon vermitteln, was Hebammen mit den Leopold´schen Handgriffen tasten können. Man kann an Tami zeigen wie das Kind erst höher sitzt und wie sich am Ende der Schwangerschaft der Leib senkt.

Tami kann gebären. Die Geburt des Kindes aus Schädel- und Beckenendlage lässt sich demonstrieren. Auch wie die Hebamme bei der Entwicklung hilft und wie sich das Kind unter der Geburt dreht, lässt sich mit Hilfe der Puppe zeigen. 

Das Baby hat Schädelnähte und Fontanellen. So kann man auch erklären, wie Hebammen bei vaginalen Untersuchungen die Lage des Kindes feststellen und wie sich der kindliche Kopf im Becken eingestellt hat. Ist das Kind geboren, folgt nach einiger Zeit die Plazenta mit der das Kind über die Nabelschnur verbunden ist. Die Plazenta haftet durch einen Magneten an der Bauchinnenwand und kann durch „leichten Zug an der Nabelschnur“ entwickelt werden. An der Nabelschnur kann man zeigen, dass diese aus einer Nabelschnur-Vene und zwei Nabelschnur-Arterie besteht. (An Eihäuten arbeite ich derzeit noch.)

Das Baby kann abgenabelt werden, der Rest der Nabelschnur bleibt dran.

Tami und ihr Baby eignen sich bestens um Bonding zu veranschaulichen. Ein paar einfache Kissen und schon kann man die Situation nach der Geburt nachstellen und besprechen.

Denn Tami kann ihr Kind auch stillen. Magnete in den Brustwarzen und im Mund des Kindes sorgen dafür, dass man jede denkbare Stillposition zeigen kann.

Tamis Bauch ist nach der Geburt ihres Kindes schlaff und weich. So kann man über die körperlichen Veränderungen und die Erwartungen für die Zeit nach der Schwangerschaft ins Gespräch kommen.

Mit wenigen Requisiten kann man zeigen und ansprechen, was man den jungen Familien für die spannende Zeit der Schwangerschaft und des Wochenbettes mitgeben will. So z.B.: „Das Tragetuch gegen Gebärmutterheimweh.“

Das Arbeiten an Tami hat mir viel Freude gemacht und eine neue Puppe ist bereits in Planung – mit einigen Erweiterungen und kleineren Veränderungen im Schnitt.
